On 2nd November 1936, the world’s first regular high definition public television service was transmitted from Alexandra Palace, so it’s no wonder we’re closely associated with the small screen. However, the iconic building has had a few cameos in some pretty major motion pictures. The “Victory Square” scenes in the film adaption of George Orwell’s 1984 (appropriately released in 1984) were shot at Alexandra Palace – in the burnt out shell of the building following the devastating 1980 fire. Our Ice Rink was temporarily transported to Russia for a scene involving the Soviet ice hockey team in The Death of Stalin. For Clint Easter’s Hereafter, our Great Hall became the site for the London Book Fair. Anyone lucky enough to have visited our Theatre might spot the recently reopened space in the latest Spider-Man film.

Where once they broadcast Muffin the Mule, experimented with Colour TV and launched BBC2, we now play host to everything from Top Gear to The X Factor, The Death of Stalin to Charlie Wilson’s War, Wireless Connect 360 festival to Idiot Prayer: Nick Cave Alone at Alexandra Palace. In 2020 we have been at the forefront of live streaming, working alongside our partners to bring the live music experience to thousands. All of our spaces can be hired for rehearsals; recent tenancies include the BBC Concert Orchestra in the Theatre and Dancing on Ice within the Ice Rink. We work with brands on a range of advertising and editorial campaigns, having recently partnered with North Face, Flannels and Vestiaire.

With a prestigious televisual history (the world's first regular television transmissions being made from here) Alexandra Palace has gone on to feature as a location in many films and dramas. The famous antenna played a crucial role in Doctor Who episode The Idiot's Lantern starring David Tennant. Clint Eastwood's Hereafter and Breaking and Entering starring Jude Law have made the most of Alexandra Palace's great variety of film locations. Numerous commercials have filmed on site; perhaps most memorably John Lewis' 150 years anniversary ad and it is perhaps unsurprising that such a famous music venue has also featured in many music videos, including James Morrison, Take That and Coldplay.

The ice skating scene in Last Christmas, in which the couple take an illicit late-night skate, was filmed at our Ice Rink. Our Ice Rink is also the location of Robbie Williams’ She’s The One music video, released in 1999. Scenes for Rare Beasts were filmed on The South Terrace and The Great Hall.
Scenes for The Current War were filmed in the South Terrace which was transformed to stand in for the 1893 Chicago World’s Columbian Exposition. Our North Yard was utilised in The Electrical Life of Louis Wain to stand in for New York’s meatpacking district in the early 19th century. The museum in Tom and Jerry: The Movie is our Palm Court while the Fish market scene was filmed in the West Hall. One Love was shot across many locations at Ally Pally, in particular the Theatre.
