It’s a Canadian creation myth. Kingston, Montreal, and Halifax have all fought to be recognized in hockey’s early history. But it’s two small communities—one in the North, one in the east—that most fiercely defend their self-appointed positions as the birthplace of Canada’s favourite game. Windsor, Nova Scotia is where hockey was born. Dél̨ın̨e, Northwest Territories is where hockey was born. Both are true, and neither is correct.

But, a very rough form of the game of hockey has been discovered in Egypt. As well as artifacts found in Ethiopia from 1000BC and Iran in 2000 BC. Most, if not all people think that hockey was originated and developed in Canada. The modern form of hockey that we all know and love today was spread around Canada by British soldiers in the mid-1800s. There is also research that mentions a hockey-like game played in the early 1800s by Mi’kmaq (Mimac) Indians in Nova Scotia.

It was probably fundamentally this game that spread throughout Canada via Scottish and Irish immigrants and the British army. By the late 1800s ice hockey competed with lacrosse as Canada’s most popular sport. By that time Canada had become the center of world hockey.
