From the start of the 2007-08 season, the competition name will change to The Barclays Premier League on a global basis. The competition is currently known as the Barclays Premiership in the UK and the Barclays English Premier League overseas. Why do some people call it the Premiership?
While the organisation has always been called the 'Premier League', the competition was named the 'Premiership' for sponsorship reasons in 1993.
The division initially lacked a sponsor for its first season as the 'FA Premier League', before it became the 'FA Carling Premiership' between 1993 and 2001.
Under a number of different sponsors, the league continued to be called the 'Premiership' until 2008 when it reverted to 'Premier League'.

The EPL’s name was changed to the Premier League ahead of their 2016/17 season after the league’s clubs, who are its exclusive shareholders, decided to institute a new strategy that saw it opt away from title sponsorship. The move was intended to enable the league to establish its own identity like other top-tier competitions in the world.

From the 1993/94 season, England’s top flight was known as the FA Carling Premiership, before the sponsorship changed in 2001 to Barclaycard until 2004. The title of the competition then changed to the FA Barclays Premiership, with this being amended to Barclays Premier League ahead of the 2007/08 campaign. Season 2015/16 marked the final campaign of a title sponsor arrangement, with the competition name becoming Premier League from 2016/17.
