Lake Como is of glacial origin, dating back to the last Ice Age, around 10,000 years ago. It’s famous ‘Y’ shape was formed from the movement of an enormous glacier, which also displaced the huge mounds which now form the promontory, known as Bellagio which divides the two ‘legs’ of the lake. It is fed by the icy waters of the Adda River.

When the Palace first opened, our ice rink area was called the Bazaar, which was part of the ‘Exhibition Department’ to the east side of the Great Hall. It subsequently went through a number of incarnations, being used as a concert hall and even at one time, a rifle range. Then on Wednesday, 4 July 1990 the ice rink was opened. The rink was also upgraded in 2010/11.
