In comparison, my fear for hockey in England is that it is where things used to be in Tasmania. With the occasional exception, results on the European front are consistently below par and there seems to be a reluctance to raise, let along confront, the hard questions. Hockey in England has no such excuse. The game here has as many, if not more players and significantly more government funding than any other country in Europe.

Over the years, many Loughborough students and alumni have played for their national team, securing in some cases, historical success. This summer, in Paris, 20% of the women representing Great Britain for women's hockey are alumnae of Loughborough University. There will also be a Loughborough presence in the men’s team as well. Statistically, she is the greatest hockey Olympian ever produced in Great Britain, as the first player to win medals at three different Games.

With a total of 13 Olympic medals (including four golds), Great Britain currently sit fourth in the all-time medal table. Along the way they have produced some of the most memorable moments in British Olympic history, with the men's stunning gold at Seoul 1988 immortalised by the quote 'Where were the Germans? But frankly, who cares?' Meanwhile the women's incredible triumph at Rio 2016 was voted by the public as the second best British women's sporting moment of all time and the ninth greatest British Olympic sporting moment in BBC Sport polls. It's not all been plain sailing for the British teams however and there have been plenty of bumps along the way.
