In England, the first recorded ice hockey games took place in the early 20th century, but it was not until after a few years that it generated enough interest to form permanent teams. By 1903, the first European ice hockey league was formed in England. It consisted of five teams, and the London Canadians won the league that year. Five years later, the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) was established, with Great Britain as a founding member. By 1914, the British Ice Hockey Association (BIHA) was established.

British ice hockey developed in the mid-1800s and the UK’s iteration of the game is what most now think about when it comes to the sport. 1903 was the year that Europe’s first hockey league was launched in the UK. Five years later, the first pro ice hockey game was played in Scotland and the International Ice Hockey Federation was started to bring cohesion to teams and leagues around the world. Britain, of course, was a founding member and other organizations to provide oversight followed in time.

The British Ice Hockey Association (BIHA) was formed in 1914 and was wound down in 1999, when it was taken over by Ice Hockey UK. The world governing body, the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF), was organised in 1908, with Great Britain being a founder member. Great Britain were Olympic champions in 1936. The first European Championship was won by Great Britain in 1910.
