The records show that 51 NHL players were born in the United Kingdom and had significant degrees of success in the league. Of these 51 players, three were born in Wales with five coming from Northern Ireland, 21 from Scotland, and 22 from England. There’s no doubt that Great Britain isn’t anywhere near a hockey power, but this list proves that UK-born players have had their fair share of success in the NHL over the years.

Yet, you can count the number of British born players to appear in the NHL during the current century on just two hands. Great Britain can claim several ex-NHL stars were born in either Scotland, England, Wales, or Northern Ireland. Although ice hockey has a long history in Great Britain and players appeared in the NHL dating back to 1917 with Joe Hall (Montreal Canadiens) and Ken Thompson (Montreal Wanderers).
