With a total of 13 Olympic medals (including four golds), Great Britain currently sit fourth in the all-time medal table. Along the way they have produced some of the most memorable moments in British Olympic history, with the men's stunning gold at Seoul 1988 immortalised by the quote 'Where were the Germans? But frankly, who cares?' Meanwhile the women's incredible triumph at Rio 2016 was voted by the public as the second best British women's sporting moment of all time and the ninth greatest British Olympic sporting moment in BBC Sport polls. It's not all been plain sailing for the British teams however and there have been plenty of bumps along the way.

GB more than matched the 11th best team in the world – outshooting them 31-28 – and will count themselves unlucky not to get anything from the game. Head Coach, Pete Russell, said: “I’m really proud of the team. That’s one of the best performances we’ve ever had since I have been coaching this team. We had huge energy and managed to bring so much momentum to the game." It just shows you what this team can do. Everyone connected with GB and the whole country should be so proud of that performance.”

Their response to being relegated in 2022 was to bounce straight back up when winning the Division 1A tournament in Nottingham in May last year. It was 1948 when GB last competed in ice hockey at the Olympics. Nobody thought that we could ever be in Pool A, but we have been and so we’ve got to keep dreaming. We had two practices before we started but we still scored 28 goals this weekend, that is obviously a good thing. When everybody expects you to win it’s not easy and you don’t know what’s going to happen but we scored loads of goals and we’ll take that. But we just had to play the right way and we dominated games.

Defender Gareth Furlong scored twice as Great Britain's men started their bid for Olympic hockey gold with a commanding 4-0 win over Spain in Pool A. Britain are aiming to secure a first Olympic medal since winning gold in 1988. The fact we probably haven't played the perfect game, but we've still managed to score four goals and keep a clean sheet is obviously something that we can take confidence from. I don't see any reason why we can't win this competition.
