Ice hockey is clearly more visible to the masses with huge television coverage across the globe. The NHL makes it easy for spectators to tune in and for betting companies to increase the sport’s popularity. Bookmakers give enticing account offers and the frequency of NHL games makes them a prime target for speculative bets.
With TV deals comes revenue for the league, which means the best players in the game all flock to the USA and Canada rather than top leagues in countries who pay smaller wages. Field hockey has not had the same appeal to TV sponsors and as a result, the money has not been ploughed into the sport to increase its popularity or talent pool.

Undoubtedly, sports betting is a vital aspect of British sports culture. On the other hand, ice hockey betting just doesn’t compare to football betting for many reasons. This lack of betting opportunities makes ice hockey less prevalent in the UK.
People are simply more fond of other sports like football and rugby than ice hockey.

As leagues like the NBA and NFL have successfully transitioned across the Atlantic, the popularity of the NHL in the UK is lagging behind as it finds Scandinavian markets more appealing and lucrative. The best form of advertising is TV, and I think we struggle to attract the big deals and rights. We’re fighting against a lot of major sports here in the UK to try and get on that ladder. The importance of seeing the highest level in the UK cannot be understated according to Dixon, as he thinks it influences hordes of new fans to attend live games. It’s the coverage that we need to try and get the sport out there and get to people who don’t even know about it.

This is due to the popularity of other sports such as football which is known as the nation’s favourite sport. There just isn’t as much support for the national Ice Hockey team as there would be if the England football team made it to the World Cup. It isn’t all the fault of football as the people in the UK have other things keeping them occupied. Whether they are playing on the latest top online bingo site or playing poker against their friends with a few beers, they aren’t sitting watching ice hockey matches. With games like football, fans have grown up playing on their school team or with their friends in the park. With ice hockey, it is much harder to get involved but it is possible.
