The Belfast Giants have enjoyed the most success by far. In the 20 full seasons since the league’s inception, Belfast has sported the best regular season in six of them, along with three playoff championships following the conclusion of the regular season. The Sheffield Steelers, therefore, boast the most playoff championships with 10, five of which have occurred since the league’s reboot.

The Sheffield Steelers, the reigning British champions, won four out of six Champions Hockey League (CHL) games against strong opponents – announcing that Great Britain's Elite Ice Hockey League (EIHL) is becoming a force in European hockey. The Steelers are the second team from Britain to make it this far – the first was the Nottingham Panthers in 2017-18. The league at home is getting better and attracting more talent, which is raising the level of the homegrown talent pool, and that means only good things for the national team. The Steelers have also beaten Swedish powerhouses Skelleftea AIK and the Vaxjo Lakers as well as the famous Czech club Sparta Prague this year. I think it’s shown a lot of people in Europe that the [British] league can play.

The referee supervises the game, calls the penalties, determines goals and handles face-offs at centre ice to start each period. Goal Judges sit off-ice behind each goal and indicates whether a goal has been scored by turning on a red light just above their station. The referee can ask his advice on disputed goals, but the referee has final authority and can overrule the goal judge. Two Linesman are used. They call offside, offside passing, icing and handle all face-offs not occurring in centre ice.
