Ice hockey is a sport that is growing in popularity in the United Kingdom. The number of registered players has increased steadily over the past few years, and there are now ice hockey teams competing in all four home nations.
The British ice hockey scene is a vibrant and exciting one, with a number of teams and leagues competing at different levels. Ice hockey in Britain is governed by two main bodies: the English Ice Hockey Association (EIHA) and the Scottish Ice Hockey Association (SIHA). The EIHA is responsible for the majority of ice hockey activity in England, while the SIHA governs the sport in Scotland.
There are a number of different leagues and competitions that take place throughout the season, both at club and national level. The most prestigious competition in British ice hockey is the Elite League, which is made up of 10 teams from across England and Wales.

The Elite Ice Hockey League is a professional league in the United Kingdom. Formed in 2003, it is the highest level of ice hockey competition in the UK. Professional ice hockey has been played in the UK since the 1930s and the Great Britain team won the Olympic gold medal in 1936. Ice hockey is now the number-one attended indoor professional sport in the UK and overall it is the third largest winter spectator sport in the UK after football and rugby union.

The National Ice Hockey League (NIHL) encompasses England Ice Hockey’s senior leagues. It is currently the second tier of British ice hockey, below the Elite Ice Hockey League. Formerly called the English National Ice Hockey League (ENIHL), it was renamed in 2012 to recognise the inclusion of several teams from Scotland and Wales. The season runs from September to April each year.
The Planet Ice National League is the top tier of England Ice Hockey’s NIHL leagues and sees 11 teams compete to be crowned Champions at the National Finals weekend in April.
Below the Planet Ice National League, the leagues are split into two regions, North and South. Each region has two divisions.
Teams within each league also take part in a cup competition made up from existing league fixtures, with the cup final in each league being held in February.

Streatham Ice Hockey Club is a British ice hockey club based in South London. Originally founded in 1932 We are one of the oldest British ice hockey teams still in existence. During the 1980s, we were one of the leading teams in the British Hockey League. A night out at the ice hockey is always a fantastic experience so come to our rink and enjoy the atmosphere! Without our loyal fans, ice hockey in Streatham would not exist!
