Great Britain forward Liam Kirk has agreed a three-year NHL entry-level contract with Arizona Coyotes. After becoming the first English-born and trained player to be drafted to the NHL, he joined Peterborough Petes in 2018 in the North American junior league, the OHL. After an incredible World Championship, he gets an entry-level contract with Arizona in the NHL - it's amazing.

Liam Steele is also on that list. The former Guildford Firekings junior is listed as a ‘C’ prospect and that rating is for potential fourth-, fifth- or sixth-round selections. It is slightly bewildering how the UK hockey scene isn’t excited about a young Brit, albeit a dual national, who is ranked so highly on the NHL Central Scouting list. NHL scouts are doing just that.

The Arizona Coyotes and British forward Liam Kirk have agreed to terms on an entry-level contract three years after he became the first player born and trained in England to be drafted, his agent and Ice Hockey UK said Friday. The 21-year-old Kirk was the joint top goal scorer at the recent world championships in Latvia, where he had seven goals in as many games for Britain. The Coyotes selected the 6-foot left winger in the seventh round of the 2018 NHL draft, taking him with the 189th overall pick.

The records show that 51 NHL players were born in the United Kingdom and had significant degrees of success in the league. Of these 51 players, three were born in Wales with five coming from Northern Ireland, 21 from Scotland, and 22 from England. There’s no doubt that Great Britain isn’t anywhere near a hockey power, but this list proves that UK-born players have had their fair share of success in the NHL over the years.

Whether anyone from the UK will gain that opportunity again, I think it’s going to be tough and that’s down to the way our league is designed now. The only way it’s going to happen is more players coming through at the top level. There is a heavy influx of imports that restricts those opportunities. If the Elite League looks more at giving young players a chance and develop them, then hopefully that would be the case.
