Teddington HC, who mark 150 years this season but have put celebrations on hold, have the rightful claim to the accolade over Blackheath, according to research by The Hockey Paper. Blackheath has ‘officially the oldest hockey club in the world’, while Teddington states ‘oldest club in the world’ proudly labelled on their club social media handles. But the debate over who can lay claim to this historic mantle can now be put to bed.

Teddington Hockey Club are the world’s oldest and due to delays relating to the pandemic, they are celebrating their 150th anniversary this year. The sport of hockey was formally invented in Bushy Park by the local cricket club looking to play sport following a particularly wet summer, and created hockey and Teddington Hockey Club which still exists to this day. Hockey as a game has been around for centuries, and Teddington formalised the rules and the way the game is played back in 1871. But in my opinion Teddington are the most influential team in modern hockey because they formalised the rules and you can see their influence all over the game.

The first Hockey Club was undoubtedly Blackheath. This club was formed not later than the year 1840. Members are still living who were playing at that date. The oldest record in The Club’s possession is the minute book of 1861 which refers to the subscription being 7/6 and the retiring secretary Mr.R.O’Neill. In the early days, Blackheath Hockey and Football (Rugby) were one club and they did not become separate entities until 1864. The Club was founded by the Old Boys of Blackheath Proprietary School and the School Bell is now used to summon the Members to dine at the Annual Dinner.

So we feel no need to strive to prove Blackheath are the oldest hockey club. We just are. Constituted in 1861. It was the first established hockey club. We played hockey as it was known then and as it had been known for decades before. We continued to play against various other clubs in the 10 years prior to 1871 when Teddington HC was formed. We have played hockey ever since. We have been accepted and ‘rightfully’ exist as the oldest club for 160 years, it’s a bit late to change that now. According to the book “Hockey” written in 1899 by P.A. Robson and J. Nicholson-Smith, the publication states: “This club was formed not later than the year 1840. Members are still living who were playing at that date”. Miroy states: “The first Hockey Club was undoubtedly Blackheath”.
