The records show that 51 NHL players were born in the United Kingdom and had significant degrees of success in the league. Of these 51 players, three were born in Wales with five coming from Northern Ireland, 21 from Scotland, and 22 from England. There’s no doubt that Great Britain isn’t anywhere near a hockey power, but this list proves that UK-born players have had their fair share of success in the NHL over the years.

Only one other Brit – Belfast Giants’ Colin Shields – has been drafted to the NHL when Philadelphia Flyers picked him up in 2000. In 1986 he was given an incredible opportunity to rub shoulders with the world’s best players in the NHL, but ended up going elsewhere. As the first UK-trained player to get a chance in the world’s top league, it began a four-month episode of his life unlike anything else he’s ever experienced.

The Arizona Coyotes and British forward Liam Kirk have agreed to terms on an entry-level contract three years after he became the first player born and trained in England to be drafted, his agent and Ice Hockey UK said Friday. The 21-year-old Kirk was the joint top goal scorer at the recent world championships in Latvia, where he had seven goals in as many games for Britain. Kirk's agent, Dan Milstein, tweeted that Kirk agreed to terms on a three-year entry-level deal. The Coyotes selected the 6-foot left winger in the seventh round of the 2018 NHL draft, taking him with the 189th overall pick.

Only two Brits, Tony Hand and Colin Shields were drafted in recent memory. Neither made it to the top.
