If hockey was born the day Creighton and his friends organized a structured game with written rules, then no, the Irish did not “invent” it. But if invention means shaping the DNA of a game, infusing it with the spirit of grit, rebellion, and endurance, then the Irish hand in hockey’s genesis is undeniable. Irish immigrants played hurling on ice in Nova Scotia and Newfoundland long before Creighton’s Montreal game. So while no single group can claim ice hockey as its sole creation, it’s fair to say that the Irish helped make the game what it is today.
Like all great things, ice hockey wasn’t created in one defining moment. James Creighton may have put together the first official match, but the game itself was already well established in the bones of the people who played it.

Although is may be a very bold statement to make, “Puck of the Irish” will explore whether there is any truth to the stories of Irish people as far back as the 1800s playing our national sport of hurling on the ice in Canada and whether this in turn evolved into hockey to make the game easy to play on the slippery surface.
Even if the Irish are not completely responsible for the origin of hockey, there’s no denying the impact the Irish have had on the game as we know it today.

Hockey originated from the northern regions of Europe, particularly in the countries of Scotland, Ireland, and England. The Irish game of “hurley” also played a significant role in the development of hockey. Hurley, which dates back over 2,000 years, shares similarities with hockey in terms of stick design and gameplay.

It's not a joke - new research has credited a teacher from the county with introducing the popular sport to the world. We can now thank one William Cochran, a native of Omagh, for Ulster's newly unearthed claim to sporting fame. Mr Cochran, who emigrated to Canada over 200 years ago, was a keen hurler, but the freezing conditions in Nova Scotia, where he settled, meant the traditional Gaelic game could not be played. He subsequently invented 'ice hurling' with specially adapted, narrower sticks - and it ultimately morphed into Canada's national sport.

Hundreds of thousands of Irish emigrated to Canada over the past 200 hundred years and they brought their beloved centuries-old game of hurling with them. The freezing winters made them adapt the game, which became ice hockey. Ice hurling became ice hockey, and quickly took hold across Canada.
The Irish were there at the beginning when they started playing ice hurling. Then they were there when the rules were being made when the first clubs were being formed. The Toronto Maple Leafs were originally the Toronto St Pat’s.
