The first Hockey Club was undoubtedly Blackheath. According to the book “Hockey” written in 1899 by P.A. Robson and J. Nicholson-Smith, this club was formed not later than the year 1840. Members are still living who were playing at that date. The oldest record in The Club’s possession is the minute book of 1861 which refers to the subscription being 7/6 and the retiring secretary Mr.R.O’Neill. Blackheath Hockey Club’s establishment is in 1861. In the early days, Blackheath Hockey and Football (Rugby) were one club and they did not become separate entities until 1864.

Teddington, who claim to be the oldest hockey club in the world alongside Blackheath, will hold a commemorative match in the spirit of 1871 to mark the club’s 150th anniversary. The club believe that it is the oldest hockey club in the world, although research by The Hockey Museum disputes this claim and say that Teddington has rightful claim to the accolade. Blackheath held a Victorian-themed hockey match on the site of the original club, on Blackheath to mark its 150th anniversary in 2012.

Blackheath has ‘officially the oldest hockey club in the world’, while Teddington states ‘oldest club in the world’ proudly labelled on their club social media handles. But the debate over who can lay claim to this historic mantle can now be put to bed.
