Jesse Owens, an African-American athlete and winner of four gold medals at the 1936 Games, set a world record in the long jump, Olympic records in the 100-metre and 200-metre races, and helped the American team set an Olympic record in the 4x100-metre relay. Several Jewish athletes won medals at the 1936 Olympics, including the Austrian weight-lifter Robert Fein, who broke the lightweight world record.

Jesse Owens was born in 1913 in Oakville, Alabama. At a young age, he moved to Cleveland with his family and eventually went on to represent Ohio State University in track and field events. Owens was selected for the 1936 US Olympic team, an announcement that was met with excitement and worry. It became even more notable when African American athlete Jesse Owens won four gold medals across various track and field events. He won a gold medal in each, breaking or tying world records in the process. Owens’ success was a huge blow to the ideology of the Nazi Party.

Jesse Owens famously won four gold medals, in the 100- and 200-meter dash, the long jump and as a member of the 4x100 meter relay team. Owens, who was 23 at the time, had Hitler looking on as host of the Games. It is unclear where the other three originals are, as the four gold medals from these Games that reside at Ohio State, where Owens attended college, are replacement medals. The German government had them made after Owens was said to have lost his originals.

Bertram Arthur Clements represented Great Britain as a centre forward during the notorious Berlin Olympics, scoring the opening goal in Great Britain's 5-4 quarter-final defeat to Poland. Bertram was one of 208 Great Britain athletes at the 1936 Berlin Summer Games, and paraded in the opening ceremony on August 1st, 1936 and the closing ceremony two weeks later. Bertram was a substitute in Great Britain’s underwhelming defeat of China in the first round on August 6th, 1936 at Berlin's Mommsenstadion in front of 8,000 spectators. The quarter final against Poland was played two days later before a crowd of 6,000 at Berlin's Poststadion ground. Bertram Clements gave Great Britain the lead with the first goal after 26 minutes.
