The NHL was founded in 1917 with only FOUR teams.
The FIRST NHL hockey teams were: Montreal Canadians, Montreal Wanderers, Toronto Arena's and Ottawa Senators.
The Quebec Bulldogs are also considered charter members of the NHL, since they were involved in the negotiations to form the league however, due to financial issues, they were unable to compete during the NHL's inaugural season.
