The Hartford Whalers were in Hartford for the first 19 years of O'Leary's life, and they've been gone for the subsequent 19 years. The Whalers franchise now operates about 600 miles to the south as the Carolina Hurricanes. Nearly two decades after the team moved away, it's not a stretch to say the Whalers are still part of the fabric of Hartford life -- and for some people, a big part.

The Hartford Whalers were in Hartford for the first 19 years of O'Leary's life, and they've been gone for the subsequent 19 years. The Whalers franchise now operates about 600 miles to the south as the Carolina Hurricanes. It turns out that the Whalers still have a surprisingly large following in Hartford. Nearly two decades after the team moved away, it's not a stretch to say the Whalers are still part of the fabric of Hartford life -- and for some people, a big part.

Within this era, teams came about and floundered, with the Montreal Wanderers, Ottawa Senators, Quebec Bulldogs, Hamilton Tigers, Montreal Maroons, New York Americans, Pittsburgh Pirates, Philadelphia Quakers, and St. Louis Eagles all departing the scene before 1942. Some of these were due to the financial constraints of the Great Depression and others were finally killed off by World War II, but when the dust settled, the six teams who remained were simply referred to as “Original”. All total, there have been 19 defunct and relocated teams in NHL history.
