The history of hockey in the UK dates back to the 19th century and is believed to have originated in England. However, it’s understood it was in England that the modern version of hockey began to develop. The first recorded game in the UK took place in 1861 at Blackheath in southeast London. In 1875, the Hockey Association was formed in England, becoming the world’s first governing body for the sport. In 1886, the first international match was played between Ireland and Wales, marking another milestone in the sport’s development. The first official hockey league in the UK, known as the English Hockey League was formed in 1895 and consisted of six teams from the London area, including Blackheath, Hampstead, and Teddington.
