Kingston, Ont., and Windsor, N.S., both have claims to be the birthplace of hockey. If you visit the official website of the town of Windsor, N.S., you'll see the community of 4,000 claims there's "near-irrefutable" evidence they're the birthplace of ice hockey. Windsor, N.S., claims that a book by Thomas Haliburton referring to "hurley" being played on a local pond in the 1810s is "near-irrefutable" evidence that the community the birthplace of hockey. According to Potter, British soldiers stationed in Kingston played hockey "as early as the 1840s," and the first written reference to the word "hockey" was made in a diary by a 23-year-old lieutenant stationed there — a diary now in the National Archives of Canada in Ottawa. The Society for International Hockey Research, made up of hockey historians, has not said where it thinks the game started, but they note the first eyewitness account of an organized game was played in neither Kingston nor Windsor — but at the Victoria Skating Rink in Montreal on March 3, 1875.

The modern game of ice hockey has several claimants for it's birthplace: Windsor, Nova Scotia; Dartmouth, Nova Scotia; Halifax, Nova Scotia; and Montreal, Quebec. The Nova Scotia town of Windsor lays claim to being the birthplace of hockey with the first games being played on the town's Long Pond as early as 1804 by students from King's College School. The former city of Dartmouth, Nova Scotia also lays claim to being the birthplace of the game. The city of Halifax has reports of games called "ricket" and "wicket" being played in the 1820's and 1830's. The Montreal Rules or McGill Rules were recorded in the Montreal newspaper The Gazette on February 27, 1877.

Windsor, Nova Scotia is where hockey was born. Dél̨ın̨e, Northwest Territories is where hockey was born. Windsor’s claim originates with dialogue between two characters in an 1844 novel by Thomas Chandler Haliburton, featuring his popular Sam Slick character. The passage references a game of “hurley” being played “on the long pond on the ice.” For Danny Dill, that’s all the proof needed. In 1824, Sir John Franklin and his crew were wintering at what was then called Fort Franklin. In a diary entry, he mentions his men passing the time with games of hockey played on the ice. It’s an open-and-shut case for former Sahtu MLA Norman Yakeleya.
