The CUIHC is one of the oldest ice hockey clubs in the world. Its founding in 1885, only ten years after the first officially recorded ice hockey game in history, predates professional leagues, international federations and, in fact, almost everything else in the hockey world, making it one of the sport’s pioneering entities. Along with its Oxford archrival, the CUIHC is part of the oldest ice hockey rivalry in the world, culminating each year in the annual Ice Hockey Varsity Match. In the Winter of 1885 the Oxford Blues and Cambridge Blues ice hockey teams travelled to St. Moritz to play the first ever ice hockey match between students from these historic Universities, the two oldest in the English-speaking world.

The first Hockey Club was undoubtedly Blackheath. This club was formed not later than the year 1840. The oldest record in The Club’s possession is the minute book of 1861 which refers to the subscription being 7/6 and the retiring secretary Mr.R.O’Neill. In the early days, Blackheath Hockey and Football (Rugby) were one club and they did not become separate entities until 1864. From 1952 the Club was based at Rubens Street, Catford which was purchased in time for The Club’s Centenary in 1961 when the Guests included Bernard Duke of Norfolk and Lord Louis Mountbatten. Today the Club is part of a thriving sports club operating seven Mens teams, four ladies teams as well as regular mixed, festival, youth and junior teams.

The Stanley Cup is the oldest professional sports trophy in North America and it is named after Lord Stanley of Preston, the 1892 Governor General of Canada. After he became interested in the sport, he donated the Cup to award Canada’s amateur hockey club. The trophy is awarded annually to the playoff champion club of the National Hockey League.
