This is due to the popularity of other sports such as football which is known as the nation’s favourite sport. There just isn’t as much support for the national Ice Hockey team as there would be if the England football team made it to the World Cup. It isn’t all the fault of football as the people in the UK have other things keeping them occupied. Sadly, this is just a sport that isn’t enjoyed as much on such a large scale.

Here’s a statistic that might come as something of a surprise. Ice Hockey is the third most popular winter sport in the UK. Only football and rugby are ahead of it, and these are both sports that are taught in schools from a young age. As far as audience numbers are concerned, it is more popular than any other indoor sport.

Undoubtedly, sports betting is a vital aspect of British sports culture. On the other hand, ice hockey betting just doesn’t compare to football betting for many reasons. This lack of betting opportunities makes ice hockey less prevalent in the UK.
People are simply more fond of other sports like football and rugby than ice hockey. This fondness can be linked to the ease of access and cost of participation.

Financial difficulties are, therefore, clearly one of the biggest issues holding ice hockey back in the UK, but it’s not the only problem it faces. The lack of stability in the top tier of British ice hockey makes it difficult for strong fan allegiances to be made. It also means that the media are less interested in reporting on the sport, making it harder to attract new fans. This creates a chicken and egg scenario that makes it difficult for ice hockey in the UK to take hold because it doesn’t yet have a big enough following to attract greater media coverage. Yet without that coverage, it will struggle to grow.
Furthermore, while the country has a reputation for being cold and wet, its temperatures don’t generally dip far below zero during the winter and when they do, it doesn’t happen for long. But financial difficulties, the wrong climate, and a lack of critical mass hold it back, and it’s unclear as to whether they can ever be overcome.
