The United Hockey League was a minor professional hockey league that was founded in 1991-92 as the Colonial Hockey League.
The league was geographically located in the Michigan/Ontario area, roughly in cities that had been left behind when the old International Hockey League outgrew that region and embarked on a national expansion campaign.
In 1997-98 the league renamed itself the United Hockey League in an attempt to distance itself from the lower-quality brand of hockey that was associated with the Colonial Hockey League.
Following the 2006-07 season the league renamed itself the International Hockey League, purposefully stating that the new league was a separate league from the United Hockey League.

It folded in 2010, with most of its teams joining the Central Hockey League (CHL). The Central Hockey League teams still operating in 2014 were then added to ECHL.
