The ‘Big Four’ of the Elite League (Cardiff Devils, Belfast Giants, Sheffield Steelers and Nottingham Panthers) have operated with a budget larger than most. For the 2019/20 season, an inside report from Chasing the Puck revealed that the ‘Big Four’ were operating on estimated wages between £17,000-£20,000 per week. Many players in the Elite League do have a secondary job. Players aren’t just incentivised by their wages.

On the show, he explained that players in the Elite League earned approximately $17,000 to $65,000. This equates to roughly £12,500 to £47,000 (based on exchange rates and whether he was talking about Canadian or US dollars will make a small difference). In monetary terms, probably somewhere between £12,500 and £47,000. There are so many other benefits that need to be taken into account however.

The average player wage in EIHL equates to around £34,000. This suggests that the highest salary for a player in the UK league only amounts to a tiny fraction of the biggest contract in the NHL – the top earners in history may have penned contracts of around £50,000 per year.
