The league has banned players from wearing the number zero or double-zero. This is due to the NHL not being able to register anyone with the number in their database.

I know the reason [they outlawed it] is it confused the NHL’s digital database years ago in ’96–97, after Marty Biron was the last guy to wear it. There must be a way to do it now with the technology to ensure that doesn’t happen.

The league has banned players from wearing the number zero or double zero, and the NHL cannot register anyone with that number in its database. Only two players have worn a single zero as a jersey number in NHL history.

Beginning with the 1996-97 season, the NHL decreed that Nos. 0 and 00 could no longer be worn since they confused the League's digital database. Today, only No. 1 through No. 98 are allowed, No. 99 retired for Gretzky at the NHL's 50th All-Star Game in 2000 following The Great One's retirement.

They would be the ONLY person with that number! Is it something that is supposed to be in the rule and was just missed? Or is it just one of the unwritten rules that 0 is not to be worn. Has this just been an oversight from a previously old rule and no one wears 0 because they assume it's illegal?
