The sport’s origins can be traced back to various forms of stick and ball games played in Europe for centuries. However, it’s understood it was in England that the modern version of hockey began to develop. The first recorded game in the UK took place in 1861 at Blackheath in southeast London. It was a significant moment as it marked the beginning of organised hockey in the country. In 1875, the Hockey Association was formed in England, becoming the world’s first governing body for the sport.
