In the French capital Great Britain have won 14 gold medals, down on 22 in Tokyo, 27 in Rio, 29 in London and 19 in Beijing. For Britain’s rowers, the Tokyo Olympic Games was a disaster. The UK taxpayer had spent £26m on the rowing programme and the team had produced a grand total of just two medals and no golds. Team GB had led the rowing medal table for the last three Games: in Tokyo, they were 14th. A rowing superpower for nearly a decade, Great Britain hit a 49-year low in Tokyo.
