We may be more northerly, but the Gulf Stream ensures that we have a very warm - albeit also very wet - climate. Some bodies of water do freeze over, but you'd have to go pretty damn far north in pretty harsh weather to find anything safe enough for one person to skate on, let alone two whole teams. We do have indoor ice rinks of course, and there is at least one league operating, but it's a pretty niche, minority sport.
It's just one of them things that hasn't caught on much over here.
Plus ice hockey's quite violent. We're far too civilised in this country for that malarky.

England Hockey, the governing body, is affiliated to both the FIH and the European Hockey Federation (EHF) and is mandated to implement the rules. In England, hockey is played in about 800 clubs affiliated to England Hockey, the sport’s governing body in the country. It’s through these clubs that the game has grown in strength, with the foundation of club activity found in league games. Clubs are organised through County and Regional Leagues, with both men and women participating in their respective leagues.

A high financial barrier is one of the primary reasons for ice hockey’s low popularity amongst other sports in the UK. The prices of the playing equipment are through the roof, and getting ice time is even more expensive because there are limited ice rinks in the UK. Fewer people have a chance to play ice hockey. Consequently, there are fewer grassroots teams. Fewer people share a connection with the sport.
People are simply more fond of other sports like football and rugby than ice hockey. Of course, this fondness can be linked to the ease of access and cost of participation.
Ice hockey’s declining popularity compared to other sports in the UK can also be attributed to a lack of media coverage and awareness. There’s no major television broadcasting deal for the UK Elite Ice Hockey League. As a result, the games are not reaching a wider audience. Furthermore, very few TV stations and newspapers cover the games.
