Financial difficulties are, therefore, clearly one of the biggest issues holding ice hockey back in the UK, but it’s not the only problem it faces. The lack of stability in the top tier of British ice hockey makes it difficult for strong fan allegiances to be made. It also means that the media are less interested in reporting on the sport, making it harder to attract new fans. In fact, it has traditionally been much easier to watch NHL games in the UK than EIHL matches. This creates a chicken and egg scenario that makes it difficult for ice hockey in the UK to take hold because it doesn’t yet have a big enough following to attract greater media coverage. Yet without that coverage, it will struggle to grow. Furthermore, while the country has a reputation for being cold and wet, its temperatures don’t generally dip far below zero during the winter and when they do, it doesn’t happen for long. But financial difficulties, the wrong climate, and a lack of critical mass hold it back, and it’s unclear as to whether they can ever be overcome.

A high financial barrier is one of the primary reasons for ice hockey’s low popularity amongst other sports in the UK. The prices of the playing equipment are through the roof, and getting ice time is even more expensive because there are limited ice rinks in the UK. Fewer people have a chance to play ice hockey. Consequently, there are fewer grassroots teams. Fewer people share a connection with the sport.
Undoubtedly, sports betting is a vital aspect of British sports culture. As such, the availability of betting opportunities in other sports, like football, contributes to their popularity. This lack of betting opportunities makes ice hockey less prevalent in the UK.
Ice hockey’s declining popularity compared to other sports in the UK can also be attributed to a lack of media coverage and awareness. There’s no major television broadcasting deal for the UK Elite Ice Hockey League. As a result, the games are not reaching a wider audience.

“If you compare it to football, all you need is a ball and two jumpers and that is why everyone plays it.
On the flip side, for hockey you need so many more materials, Astroturf, sticks, goalie kits and it is all expensive.
So, notoriously, only people from certain backgrounds play.”
Only six per cent of those playing at England Hockey clubs were of ethnic minority backgrounds, according to England Hockey’s recent national survey, while the governing body has no Black, Asian and minority ethnic (BAME) members on its board.
I believe this is not due to a lack of ability but rather a lack of opportunity.
