Football did not survive the declaration of war on Germany on September 3, 1939, however. The third round of Football League fixtures were played the day before Britain joined the war against the Axis powers, and with the declaration of war the season was abandoned. Football was suspended between 1915-19 due to World War I, though Britain’s declaration of war on Germany on August 4, 1914 did not affect the 1914/15 season, which was completed with Everton winning the league by one point.
