Indoor/outdoor rowing is the most physically demanding of all sports. You use both upper and lower body, pushing (with the legs) and pulling (with the arms) against a resistance. Hard work for the aerobic system and muscles. You can work every major muscle group including legs, buttocks, shoulders and stomach.

The athletes are amongst the fittest in the world and the skill level is extremely high. It’s absolutely up there, in terms of calories burned per hour etc. Also in terms of time spent near the maximum heart rate there aren’t many sports that compete. For example when playing the top guys I can experience an average heart rate of over 170bpm for upwards of 90 minutes. The average person will burn over 1000 calories playing for an hour so it really is a physical challenge.

Kokpar. It’s the equivalent of American football on horseback – and with a sheep's carcass for a ball. From the moment a contender picks it up, they will have any one of the six opposing players trying to rip it from their grasp. Needless to say, it is played by some of the hardest, toughest and strongest guys I have seen astride a horse. Kokpar requires strength, horsemanship, and certainly isn't for the squeamish.
