Despite losing the match 10-3, they have since gone on to acquire the Cup on 13 occasions (the third most in the history of the competition behind Leeds and Wigan), starting in 1956 with a 13-2 win over Halifax at the Old Wembley. The 1960s brought home two more titles (both against Wigan) in 1960-61 and 1964-65, when the club secured a Cup and League double as they won the Championship that year too. It was the start of a period of Cup success in the 2000s, notably as the club lifted three consecutive Cups between 2006 and 2008 as head coach Daniel Anderson completed a feat that has only been achieved twice in competition history. For all the success over those years, it was also the start of a 13-year wait for the Cup to return to the Totally Wicked Stadium, which ended with a 26-12 result against Castleford in 2021.

It is the 13th time Saints have won the Challenge Cup. It was the first time Saints have brought the Challenge Cup back to their ‘new’ Totally Wicked Stadium/Langtree Park home. It is the first time Saints have had both major trophies since the Challenge Cup win of 2007. Saints win continues a trend for back to back champions.

St Helens etched their names further into the history books of the Women’s Challenge Cup. Matty Smith’s side lifted the trophy for a fourth year on the spin. But given the ‘St Helens’ brand they now go under, this is unprecedented success.
