The origins of hockey can be traced back almost 4’000 years, with historical references found in Iran, Egypt and Greece. The birth of modern hockey and drafting of the first rules of the game was in the United Kingdom in 1876, following the establishment of the first clubs, Blackheath Club (est. 1849) and Teddington Hockey Club (est. 1871). Hockey debuted at the Games of the 4th Olympiad in London, England in 1908, with England, France, Germany, Ireland, Scotland and Wales competing in the Olympic Men`s Hockey competition.

But, a very rough form of the game of hockey has been discovered in Egypt. As well as artifacts found in Ethiopia from 1000BC and Iran in 2000 BC. It is believed this ancient form of hockey was played by the Romans, Greeks, and the Aztecs. These games were more comparable to field hockey than ice hockey, but that is because there was no ice in these areas. The modern form of hockey that we all know and love today was spread around Canada by British soldiers in the mid-1800s. There is also research that mentions a hockey-like game played in the early 1800s by Mi’kmaq (Mimac) Indians in Nova Scotia, which was influenced by the Irish game of hurling.

Since ball-stick games are as old as our civilization, the earliest origins may be from China, Persia, or Egypt. Archeologists discovered that an early form of the ball-and-stick game was played in Greece the 5th century BC. According to sources, the countries which mostly contributed to the development of hockey were Great Britain and France, where field hockey remains to be a popular summer sport. British soldiers stationed in Canada formed the modern game in the middle of the 19th century. During the next 30 years, many leagues and amateur clubs were organized in Canada.
