Liam Kirk became the first player born and trained in England to be picked in the National Hockey League draft after being selected by Arizona Coyotes. He joins Scottish duo Colin Shields and Tony Hand as the only players born and trained in Britain to have been drafted to the NHL. Hand was chosen by the Edmonton Oilers in 1986 and Shields was picked by the Philadelphia Flyers in 2000, though neither played a game.

Teenager Liam Kirk is on course to be the first UK-born and trained ice hockey player to star in North America’s National Hockey League. Next month, the Sheffield Steelers forward from Maltby, South Yorkshire, could become the first British-born and trained athlete ever to make a National Hockey League (NHL) team. Only two Brits, Tony Hand and Colin Shields were drafted in recent memory. Neither made it to the top.

Liam Kirk became first English-trained ice hockey player to be drafted by the NHL in the US. The 19-year-old was picked up in the seventh round of the draft by Arizona Coyotes last year. Only Scots Tony Hand and Colin Shields, who will be making his international farewell in Slovakia before retiring at 39, had ever been drafted by an NHL club among British developed players.

Liam Kirk, 21, is the first English born and trained player to be drafted by a club in the NHL. The NHL dream is still alive. I want to play some good hockey, have some success with the team and see what happens from there.

The records show that 51 NHL players were born in the United Kingdom and had significant degrees of success in the league. Of these 51 players, three were born in Wales with five coming from Northern Ireland, 21 from Scotland, and 22 from England. There’s no doubt that Great Britain isn’t anywhere near a hockey power, but this list proves that UK-born players have had their fair share of success in the NHL over the years.

I was drafted by the Edmonton Oilers and I was fortunate to get the chance to be invited to their training camp, which was great. Looking back, I didn’t know what it meant to be drafted as I wasn’t a great follower of the NHL at the time. But when I got to Edmonton, the organisation was fantastic and I got to work alongside Wayne Gretzky and Mark Messier – two men considered as the best players in the world. Only one other Brit – Belfast Giants’ Colin Shields – has been drafted to the NHL when Philadelphia Flyers picked him up in 2000.
