Great Britain’s women clinched bronze with a thrilling 4-3 victory over India. Five goals inside a frantic second quarter saw GB go from 2-0 up, thanks to goals from Ellie Rayer and Sarah Robertson, to being 3-2 down at half-time after India rallied. GB responded well and equalised five minutes after half-time through captain Hollie Pearne-Webb in another entertaining quarter. Grace Balsdon’s brilliant drag flick at the start of the final quarter would prove to be the difference as GB took a well-earned bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics.

Britain took a 2-0 lead before India countered with three goals in just four minutes. The GB team fought back in the second half and eventually prevailed 4-3. This was a triumph of resilience that resulted in the squad becoming the first British hockey team to win a medal at three consecutive games.

India, somehow, first staved off Great Britain’s 11 players with old school defensive grit and then thwarted their opposition’s modern day tech, as they won an Olympic men’s quarter-final shoot-out this afternoon having played with nine outfielders for all but 17 minutes after a rare red card to Amit Rohidas. Thus, at the final hooter, India’s players thrashed the air in delight at taking it to a shoot-out after a 1-1 draw. Sure enough, on-field joy then swept across the astro and the pockets of light blue in the packed stands as Sreejesh proved the star between the posts. He stood tall, smothering and saving two GB shoot-outs as India advanced to the semi-finals 4-2 against a GB men’s side many had fancied unlocking a first medal since those Seoul heroics in 1988.

India win the penalty shoot-out 4-2 It was another highly contested encounter, which ended 1-1 at full time. With the scores level it came down to a shoot-out which India won, scoring all four after GB had scored two but missed two. Albery and Wallace scored for GB, before Williamson fired wide and Roper’s shot on the reverse was saved, to give India a 4-2 shoot-out win. India advance to the semi-finals and for Great Britain, sadly their Olympic campaign is over.

Germany prevailed 2-1 over Great Britain men on Friday night. In the end, though, it was a first Olympic defeat of their campaign and, after two disallowed goals, a quarter-final with India. Ruhr sent Payne the wrong way, with a decisive low push to double the lead. With 14 seconds left, Germany held firm as Furlong rattled the post and crossbar.

India beat Team GB on penalties to progress to the Olympic semi-finals. Team GB faced India in the Paris Olympics quarter-finals on Sunday morning. Team GB men's hockey side suffer penalty shootout heartbreak against 10-man India as they crash out of the Paris Olympics after dramatic quarter-final showdown. Briefly, India were down to nine outfield players after another of their players was shown a green card and sent to the sin bin for two minutes. India even went ahead, through Harmanpreet Singh, and the search for an equaliser resembled the Alamo in the third quarter before Lee Morton, whose two goals against the Netherlands had rescued a point, finally equalised. After the first miss in the shoot-out, Britain’s Phil Roper saw goalkeeper PR Sreejesh smother his shot, sending India, the world No 5, into wild celebrations.
