Two decades ago British athletes won just nine golds, 30 medals in total and finished in 10th place for the second Olympics in a row. That is down on the last three Games but better than Beijing 2008 and its predecessors. Its Virtual Medal Table forecasts just 17 golds for Team GB, which would be their lowest total since 2004, albeit nearly double the Athens figure.

But it is not good news for Team GB, who have taken their lowest gold medal haul since Athens 2004. In the French capital Great Britain have won 14 gold medals, down on 22 in Tokyo, 27 in Rio, 29 in London and 19 in Beijing. Team GB will finish Paris 2024 in their lowest medal table spot since Athens 2004.

For Britain’s rowers, the Tokyo Olympic Games was a disaster. The UK taxpayer had spent £26m on the rowing programme and the team had produced a grand total of just two medals and no golds. Team GB had led the rowing medal table for the last three Games: in Tokyo, they were 14th. A rowing superpower for nearly a decade, Great Britain hit a 49-year low in Tokyo.
