The players that finish in a tie for the lead after 72 holes of stroke play will head back onto the course to play a four-hole aggregate playoff. The player with the lowest aggregate score in the four additional holes will be crowned Champion Golfer of the Year. If the competitors remain tied after the regulation play-off, those remaining will play sudden death until we have a champion. However, the amount of holes that are played in an Open playoff is decided by the Open Championships Committee. In the event of a tie for first place in 2024, there will be a four-hole play-off over the 1st, 2nd, 17th and 18th holes. If still tied, a hole-by-hole play-off will be played over the 18th hole only until a winner emerges.

The PGA Championship uses a three-hole playoff aggregate to determine its champion, if two players are locked after 72 holes. The player with the lowest combined score after these three selected holes is the winner. If a winner is still not found, there is a sudden-death hole-by-hole match until someone wins outright. The three-hole playoff at the PGA Championship in 2024 at Valhalla will be contested on Nos. 13, 17 and 18.

A play-off takes place when there is more than one golfer on the same score at the summit of the leaderboard after 72 holes of regulation play. The PLAYERS play-offs were sudden-death shootouts until 2013, starting on the iconic par-3 17th hole. That changed in 2014, when The PLAYERS moved to a three-hole aggregate system, where the player who takes the least amount of shots in the three allocated holes is the champion. The holes chosen are the final three – 16,17 and 18 – played in order. If a winner is not found, the players move back to the 17th for a shootout.

Each event features its own playoff structure. Any players tied atop the leaderboard at the end of 72 holes will continue play in a stroke-play, sudden-death format. The players will alternate between the 18th and 10th holes until a winner is decided. Any players tied atop the leaderboard at the end of 72 holes will compete in a three-hole (13, 17 and 18) playoff based on aggregate stroke play. If players are still tied after the three holes, they continue in a stroke-play, sudden-death format through holes 18, 13, 17 and back to 18 until a winner is decided. Any players tied atop the leaderboard after 72 holes will compete in a two-hole (17 and 18) aggregate playoff. The player with the lowest score is then declared the winner. If there's still a tie following the playoff, the players compete in a sudden-death format, alternating between the 17th and 18th holes until a winner is decided. Any players tied atop the leaderboard after 72 holes will compete in a four-hole, stroke-play playoff. The player with the lowest aggregate score following those four holes is declared the winner. If any players remain tied after the four-hole playoff, they will continue in a hole-by-hole, sudden-death (stroke-play) format until a winner is decided.

In the event of any ties after 54 holes in LIV Golf, a playoff will be played to settle the individual competition. Under similar rules to the PGA Tour and DP World Tour, a LIV playoff will adopt a sudden-death format, with any tied golfers playing the 18th hole again. A winner is then determined by a player scoring the lowest score among the remaining players.
