It is never too late to start playing hockey. Players have joined hockey programs at 12-13 years old and still made varsity hockey teams. More importantly, the expansion of college intramural and adult teams have made hockey a lifetime sport. Many adult leagues in Minnesota offer clinics, teams and leagues designed specifically for beginners.

It’s never too late to get them started! Players of all ages sign up for organized hockey for the first time every season. Some players even wait until adulthood to join the sport! Some NHLers even made it pro after starting “late.” Your child will be at a slight disadvantage having not started earlier, of course. But it is never too late for them to take part in the skills and character-building game that is hockey.

Our families think that at 15, 16 years old if you haven’t made it, you aren’t that player and you don’t have a chance. It’s exactly the opposite. Even at those ages, there is a significant portion developing after prime selection years.

Unfortunately, getting into ice hockey at this age is quite difficult. You’re too old to join most hockey development clubs, but you’re not old enough to play rec hockey yet. This is exactly the position I was in, but don’t lose hope! This option doesn’t work for most people as the majority of U18 ice hockey teams stop taking new members once they’re 13, but some still do and it’s worth a try if you find one that does. Contact them, explain your passion for the game and see if they’ll let you train with them! If none of those options work for you, you might be out of luck for a while. But that doesn’t mean you can’t get a head start!

It's never too late to take up any sport! Although Hockey is a very technical sport, you can learn it at all ages. I've successfully learned people to play and enjoy hockey that were well into their 30's and 40's.
