Manon Rhéaume began playing at the age of five and her early career was full of firsts, including being the first female to play at the International Pee Wee Hockey Tournament. That year she signed a contract with the Tampa Bay Lightning and became the first and, as of 2009, only woman to sign a contract with a professional hockey team. She played in one preseason exhibition game in 1992 against the St. Louis Blues and followed it with a second in 1993 against the Boston Bruins.

She played one period of an exhibition for Tampa Bay against St. Louis on Sept. 23, 1992, becoming the first — and still only — woman to suit up for an NHL game. She also didn’t intend to make history, but she couldn’t say no when the expansion Tampa Bay Lightning invited her to their training camp after she had helped Canada win gold at the 1992 women’s world championships. Tampa Bay Lightning goaltender Manon Rheaume uses her glove to make a save during her professional debut against the St. Louis Blues on Sept. 23, 1992, in Tampa, Fla.
