Teddington are the founders of modern hockey. Hockey as a game has been around for centuries, and Teddington formalised the rules and the way the game is played back in 1871. But in my opinion Teddington are the most influential team in modern hockey because they formalised the rules and you can see their influence all over the game. Teddington Hockey Club are the world’s oldest and due to delays relating to the pandemic, they are celebrating their 150th anniversary this year. The sport of hockey was formally invented in Bushy Park by the local cricket club looking to play sport following a particularly wet summer, and created hockey and Teddington Hockey Club which still exists to this day.

Blackheath Hockey Club is reputed to be the oldest Hockey club in the world and was formed no later than 1840. In 1897, almost 57 years later, an advert appeared in the Loughborough Echo announcing that: “The newly formed Hockey Club for Loughborough will hold a practice match this afternoon at Shelthorpe at 3 o’clock to which all interested in the game are invited”. It was after that practice match that Loughborough Town Hockey club was officially formed.

The first Hockey Club was undoubtedly Blackheath. This club was formed not later than the year 1840. Members are still living who were playing at that date. The oldest record in The Club’s possession is the minute book of 1861 which refers to the subscription being 7/6 and the retiring secretary Mr.R.O’Neill.
