The doors at the new Wembley Stadium have opened for the first time for a special community event. The £757m ground was due to reopen in August 2005 but hold-ups led to music and sports events being cancelled. An under-21s game between England and Italy will be the first competitive football match to be played at the rebuilt stadium on 24 March. George Michael will be the first performer to play there on 9 June.

In 2005, the arena underwent a major transformation, closing for 14 months for a £35 million refurbishment. We reopened in April 2006 with a new feature: the 'Square of Fame.' After the COVID-19 pandemic, we were among the first venues to reopen and rebranded as OVO Arena Wembley in 2022.

Wembley is scheduled to reopen "early" in 2006, nearly six years after the old stadium hosted its final competitive match. It will be completed four years later at a cost of £757 million, mainly from the private sector. In 1998 the stadium was estimated to cost £320 million and be ready by 2002.

The reopening - with the 2007 Cup Final on 19 May - will bring to an end the England team's four-year experiment of playing games in grounds across the country, which has proved hugely popular. The stadium is now almost ready. The seats and pitch are in place, and only some small-scale 'finishing-off' still remains to be done.
