Wembley Stadium was completed - at a cost of £750,000 - just five days before the first event was held there, the FA Cup Final between Bolton Wanderers & West Ham United. But the first match was not an all-ticket affair, which led to reported crowds of between 250,000 and 300,000 in a stadium with an official capacity of 125,000. Now known as the 'White Horse' final, it's an image of Billy the Police horse that is often used to define that day, but this image of crowds being pushed back off the playing area goes some way to illustrating the sheer volume of people.

Wembley Stadium, although now seen primarily as the focal point of British sport, was originally designed as the centrepiece of the British Empire Exhibition in 1924. Following the site selection for the British Empire Exhibition, it was completely transformed. Construction of the stadium began slightly earlier, in 1922, with Sir Robert McAlpine's engineering company working on designs by architects Sir John Simpson and Maxwell Ayrton. The building was completed on April 24, 1923. 4 days later it hosted its first major sporting event: the 1923 FA Cup final between Bolton Wanderers and West Ham United.

It was the first event where Tickets for Troops had offered tickets for an event at Wembley Stadium. More than 1,000 troops, including soldiers, sailors, airmen and Royal Marines, enjoyed a night of international football at Wembley Stadium thanks to Tickets for Troops. Free tickets were distributed by Tickets for Troops for the England World Cup warm-up match at Wembley on Monday 24 May, when England secured a 3-1 victory over Mexico.

However, its history goes back a further 40 years, to the Second World War when two U.S. Forces teams played. The Rugby League Challenge Cup Final was first played at the Stadium in 1929. The Empire Pool (now Arena) was built in 1934, as a year-round venue, for swimming in the summer and ice hockey and public skating in winter. It got its name because the first event held there was the swimming competition for the 1934 British Empire Games.
