The Six Nations is the successor to the Home Nations Championship which started in 1883, played between England, Ireland, Scotland, and Wales and was the first international rugby union tournament. With the addition of France in 1910, this became the Five Nations Championship, which in turn became the Six Nations Championship with the addition of Italy in 2000. The tournament generally begins on the first weekend in February and culminates on the second or third Saturday in March.

The history can be dated back to 1883 when England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland competed in the Home Nations Championship. The tournament takes place in February and March each year on a home and away basis. Until the year 2000, the tournament was the Five Nations Championship – but Italy are now the newest nation to be included.

Starting on the first weekend in February, it’s not only Europe’s greatest rugby spectacle, but a sporting gala that occupies a unique place in Welsh culture. Its direct ancestor was the Home Nations Championship, inaugurated on 16 December 1883 when Wales took on England at Swansea (and lost).
