Now the most fascinating debate around numbers is what digits are never to be touched again. Mario Lemieux‘s 66 isn’t officially retired but most teams avoid it, and God forbid a team does allow it to be worn. Even with this information in hand, there was so much vitriol a d handwringing over the situation. A large portion of NHL fans acted like every single time Ho-Sang stepped on the ice he was eroding Lemieux’s Hall of Fame career. Now before I go further I do want to acknowledge I understand to a degree why people think these two numbers should never be worn again. Gretzky and Lemieux are two of the greatest players to ever play hockey. Lemieux left us all wondering what could have been, he was arguably talented if not better than Gretzky but had his career cut short by injuries.

Apparently you're not allowed to wear this number because it makes hockey people really mad, even though the number isn't retired around the league or anything. A guy called Mario who was really really good wore it, and that means that nobody else can, even though they can. So you can, but many in hockey will tell you you can't, and then you'll have to say you're wearing it as a tribute even if you aren't, and it'll get very very silly and overblown and you'll be asked questions about it for ages and people will say you're arrogant and oh god why are we even having to write this?

66 is 99 upside down, and I had the same agent as Wayne as a junior, and I wanted to have my own number. So they just said,’ Why don’t you pick 99 upside down? 66!’ So that’s the story.

Lemieux decided to take the number 66 was 99 flipped upside down. Both Gretzky and Lemieux shared the same agent in Gus Badali, so the move made sense.
