Great Britain’s recent success in gaining promotion to the top tier of the World Championship competition and remaining there has led to a meteoric rise up the IIHF rankings. Following a successful campaign in Latvia, GB has risen three places to 16th. It’s the highest that Great Britain has ever been ranked since the IIHF introduced the system in 2003. Another strong performance and avoiding relegation in 2022 will lead to another rise in the rankings inside the top sixteen. An unthinkable premise five years ago.

Third place in the world rankings is a huge step forwards for this team and a real testament of the hard work that everyone involved in the team has put in. In an achievement not seen in 20 years, the men’s team have reached third place in the FIH World Rankings as they continue to make progress. The performances from the Great Britain team at the recent FIH Pro League in London which saw two victories has seen them move up one place in the rankings to achieve their all-time high.

For GB to be within two goals of their quality, shows how far the programme has come in recent years. GB went down 4-2 against the world’s number one side Canada, in their opening game at the World Championship in front of a crowd of 16,935 people at the O2 Arena, in Prague. There are not many teams in the history of the sport who can live with Canada. Coach Pete Russell's side, featuring Sheffield Steelers Robert Dowd, Sam Jones and Cole Shudra, can all one day tell their grandchildren of that accomplishment alone. They rocked Canada when ex-Steeler Kirk had the audacity to put the Brits ahead. The game left plenty of questions to be asked by Canada - but none of GB, who showed tremendous resilience and courage.
