Scottish emigrants to Canada played shinty on ice in winter, giving rise to the game of ice hockey.
Shinty is probably the grandfather of Canadian ice hockey.
But English field hockey's influence was stronger.
Hockey on the ice originated in England.
We are sure that Scottish immigrants played a role in giving rise to the game of ice hockey in Canada.
But the original teams in Montreal, which they regard as the sport's official birthplace, were also made up of players of English, Irish, Welsh and French descent.
Scottish and Irish soldiers played field shinty in Newfoundland and Nova Scotia in 1800.

Most people consider its rightful birthplace to be in Canada, where hockey is the country’s national sport. Some say that the Irish and French played a version back in the 1700s, but others say that Canadians invented it in the mid-1800s.

Délı̨ne (pronounced 'day-le-neh'), Northwest Territories, is known as the birthplace of hockey. The Jerry Vital Memorial Arena is more than just a place for hockey - it’s a hub for Délı̨ne First Nations to gather, play sports, drum, dance, sew, and share meals year-round. Home to the Délı̨ne Braves and Délı̨ne Chiefs (also known as the Oldtimers), the local hockey teams, The Jerry Vital Memorial Arena rink also serves as training ground for an annual free hockey camp led by between 1-6 NHL players to inspire the next generation of athletes, some who fly or drive in from neighbouring regions to attend.

And so it was on that night at the Victoria Skating Rink in Montreal on March 3, 1875, that two squads of nine players who were from the skating club that called the rink home, made history even if it didn't end exactly as they had anticipated. The game, organized by Halifax native James G.A. Creighton -- considered one of the fathers of hockey in Canada -- came to a premature halt when other members of the skating club, enraged by the length of the game and the fact a bunch of men skating around trying to whack a wooden disc into a goal were impeding their ability to skate freely, tangled with the players. The Montreal Evening Witness newspaper indicated the game ended at 9:30 p.m. and spectators seemed pleased with the display.
Regardless of the outcome and, frankly, regardless of the disturbance that brought to a close the historic tilt that night at the two-story brick edifice in downtown Montreal, the game would start a country's love affair with indoor hockey that has continued undeterred for almost a century and a half. Creighton reportedly asked friends back east to send him sticks, which ended up being used in that first game 142 years ago.
