It’s never a bad thing to play on home ice and Team GB will relish the opportunity to play their first round of Olympic Qualifiers in Cardiff next year. While Pete Russell’s squad fell short the last time they hosted the tournament, the continued emergence of Liam Kirk and Cade Neilson could help Team GB come out on top against Romania, China, and whichever team advances from round one. Cardiff Devils supporters often pack the Vindico Arena, creating a difficult atmosphere for away squads to play in. If they turn out in similar numbers for the national team, it could be a week to remember for Russell and Co.

GB’s Men’s Ice Hockey Team won bronze at the 1924 Olympics, followed by a gold in the 1936 Games. However, since that early success, the country pulled funding and was never seen as a contender on the global stage again. Whilst the team is yet to qualify for the Olympics, the number of British female players has nearly doubled since 2011 to 889 eligible players as of 2019.

The group winners will progress to Final Qualifying in August 2024 – the final stage before the Winter Olympics in Italy.
This is the start of another big year for us and it’s great to be hosting a tournament on home ice in the UK again.
GB will face Romania, China and Serbia at the Vindico Arena from Thursday 8th to Sunday 11th February.
Great Britain have named their team for next month’s men’s Olympic Qualifiers in Cardiff.

Great Britain will travel to Denmark in August for the men’s Final Olympic Qualification. The four-team Group F – involving Great Britain, Denmark, Norway and Japan – will take place from 29th August to 1st September. Each group winner will progress through to the 2026 Winter Olympics which is being held in Italy. GB booked their place in this stage with three wins from three in Cardiff last weekend, beating China (10-1), Serbia (11-0) and Romania (7-4).
