Team GB men will head to the Paris Olympics with one of their strongest squads in recent memory as Great Britain goes in search of a first men’s hockey medal since 1988’s memorable gold. Revington, in what some believe to be a risky move, will instead rely on the likes of Ward, Phil Roper and Olympic debutant Gareth Furlong for penalty corner firepower, which could play a pivotal part in Paris with a raft of top nations in the mix for medals this summer. Lee Morton is also a standout addition, the left-sided Scot having proved himself at international level with his powerful instinct for attacking hockey. Williamson is part of a new cohort of GB and England players who have progressed from the successful junior ranks.

GB started their campaign with a fantastic performance in a 4-2 defeat by world number one Canada. Ben O’Connor scored a superb solo goal in the third session as GB won many plaudits for their performance. GB have produced some memorable performances in the World Championship, including the 4-3 win in overtime to beat France to stay up in 2019 and beating Belarus in regulation time in 2021. We have been at this level for four of the past five years and our structure is our biggest strength.

With a total of 13 Olympic medals (including four golds), Great Britain currently sit fourth in the all-time medal table. Along the way they have produced some of the most memorable moments in British Olympic history, with the men's stunning gold at Seoul 1988 immortalised by the quote 'Where were the Germans? But frankly, who cares?' For GB to be within two goals of their quality, shows how far the programme has come in recent years. Maltby's Liam Kirk scored and registered an assist as Great Britain demonstrated how capable they are at closing the gap on the world's ice hockey elite. GB went down 4-2 against the world’s number one side Canada, in their opening game at the World Championship. There are not many teams in the history of the sport who can live with Canada.
