After winning gold as Great Britain & Ireland at the 1920 Summer Olympics, the first British Hockey Board (BHB) was formed in 1948 ahead of the Games being hosted in London that summer. Since then it has always been Great Britain who have competed at the Olympics while representation at other tournaments such as the Hockey Champions Trophy and FIH Hockey Pro League has been split between GB and individual Home Nations competing in their own right.

The use of the word hockey was first recorded in a 1773 book by Richard Johnson, but there’s also a belief that it may have been mentioned much earlier (1363) in a proclamation by King Edward III of England. In its current form, field hockey was first played in England in the mid-18th century, and it was in 1862 that the first hockey club (Blackheath) was created. The Hockey Association came into existence 24 years later, and it paved the way for the formation of both men and women’s associations. By 1893, a magazine for hockey had been published, with coverage of the game quite extensive in the early years of the sport. Two years after the magazine, England’s men played their first international match against Ireland, scoring five and conceding none. Men’s hockey made its debut in the Olympics in 1908, with England winning a gold medal. The English hockey team was an active one, playing 143 games by the Second World War.

England Hockey was formed on 1 January 2003 to replace the English Hockey Association (EHA) which had had to suspend operations 2002 because of significant financial problems. The English Hockey Association had in turn been formed in 1996 to combine the function of the separate governing bodies for men's, women's and mixed hockey. Following the demise of the EHA, England's international hockey was for a time managed through a separate limited company called World Class Hockey Limited, which was funded entirely by Sport England. These operations were merged back into England Hockey on 1 July 2005.

The history of hockey in the UK dates back to the 19th century and is believed to have originated in England. The first recorded game in the UK took place in 1861 at Blackheath in southeast London. In 1875, the Hockey Association was formed in England, becoming the world’s first governing body for the sport. In 1886, the first international match was played between Ireland and Wales, marking another milestone in the sport’s development. The first official hockey league in the UK, known as the English Hockey League was formed in 1895 and consisted of six teams from the London area, including Blackheath, Hampstead, and Teddington. In 1923, the English Hockey Association was formed to oversee and regulate the various leagues and competitions in the country.
